Tyler Perry is back in drag for yet another movie! This time, it’s “Madea Goes To Jail”, which was released as a movie this year, and which is based on a Tyler Perry-written play of the same name. This time around, Perry’s well-known character “Madea Simmons” goes to jail for her uncontrollable anger management problems.
As I watched it, I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching two movies in one – a hilarious comedy on one hand, and a sappy melodrama on the other. In the end, the movie was a bit less entertaining than I had expected it to be. Why? I’ll expand further below.
“Madea” is undoubtedly the world’s favorite irreverent pistol-packing Grandma, but the movie has a sub-plot about prostitution, drug abuse and new life beginnings, stuff that although nice is not so appealing.
I won’t get into the nitty gritty of the movie, you can see that for yourself – I never liked giving away the whole movie – but the best parts of Madea Goes To Jail are definitely her motor-mouthed outbursts and antics. Notably, Madea doesn’t actually GO TO JAIL until only approximately half and hour is left in the movie. Huh? So why did I think the entire movie would be about her going to jail from the start til maybe almost the end? The movie’s name maybe?? As a result, the conclusion of the movie seems a bit rushed.
Madea Goes To Jail is largely about bad choices and redemption. It’s definitely not as entertaining as previous Tyler Perry / Madea movies (Why Did I Get Married and The Family That Preys) but if you’re a die-hard Perry fan, you probably won’t mind this movie at all.
